A Week in the Wilderness: Backcountry Camping on Isle Royale

Welcome to Our Isle Royale Adventure

Rocky shoreline along Lake Superior at Isle Royale

Isle Royale National Park is the least visited National Park in the lower 48. Located 55 miles north of Copper Harbor in Lake Superior. This remote island is only accessible by ferry or seaplane, which keeps the crowds away and the wilderness intact. My parents and I are a planning a week-long backcountry trip to Isle Royale. The idea of this website to provide some knowledge of the land and the difficulites that can come along with being there.

What You Will Find on This Site

This website covers everything we are putting together for our week-long backcountry trip to Isle Royale. The Planning and Gear page goes over how we are getting to the island, what we are packing, and what you need to think about before heading out to a place with no stores or services. The Trail and Campsites page talks about our route out of Rock Harbor, the campgrounds we are looking at staying at, and what the trails are actually like out there. The Wildlife and Nature page gets into the animals and ecosystems that make Isle Royale such a unique place, including the wolves and moose that the island is famous for. I put this together for anyone thinking about making the trip or just curious about what Isle Royale has to offer.
